Census Projects

The Branch has completed a number of projects involving the transcriptions of various census for Simcoe County. These include:

1861 Census – During the 1861 Census, the County of Simcoe had 23 enumeration districts, including Muskoka and Morrison Townships. Each district was transcribed separately and a book published that includes a transcript of the pages of the census as they appeared on the microfilm as well as an index. Every name is included in each township book.

1871 Census – The transcription for this particular census is an index to the heads of households only.

1891 Census – Volunteers completed the transcription of every line in Simcoe County’s Personal Census for 1891 and produced a set of 21 volumes. Each book contains an index as well as a transcript of the pages of the census in the order that they appeared on the microfilm.

Information from the indexes for the 1861 and 1891 census has been included in our Settlers Database, which is searchable online.
